Hi all,
I came across your site some time ago and registered but have not posted before.
I am hoping to revive my Z1 in the future and the info here will be invaluable.
The engine number is Z1E000034 which I am told is 1972 number 34 and the frame not matching Z1F22378 which they said was 1974 but looking at your database it may be 1973?
I traced the previous owners back as far as 1975 which is when the bike was first registered as far as we know so perhaps it had been in an accident sometime before registration.

George.

There are some features on the 72 engine (not sure how long the differences lasted) but make these engines unique. Someone here can probably point these differences out and see if the engne George has has those particular features.

George, I would guess that this engine is a replacement engine, early engines don't have the oil capacity on them as this one does.

Not wanting to be nasty or anything but that casing almost looks re stamped. If you blow it up and look closely you can see what looks to be an original Z1 stamping to the left

Hi
this engine-number is a fake . !
Sorry , If I have to say unfortunately.

" Z1E " was subsequently stamped ,
" 000034 " is original KZ900A4 ( Z1E ) stamped typing number .
I think it is a KZ 900 A4 crankshaft housing ( oil 3700cc mark on the surface , no increase) , Z1E 1000034 = production-date Jan.1976 .
oil-mark with increase = KZ 1000 A1-A2-A2A .

all Z1-Z1A-Z1B-KZ900A engine have a " 1 " with Underlined . ( in the Z1E and also in the Z1F )

I hope I could help

regards achim

Welcome George,
Sorry to say that Achim is totally correct. It's not even a very good re-stamp!
Might possibly be a Z1000 engine case which started KZT00AE (I think) which would account for all that space in front of the Z1 stamp.
The Z1000 is not my speciality, so it may well be Z900 cases as Achim says. Definitely not Z1 though. Sorry
